Solar panel cost in England is typically £6,400 to £7,800 for a 4kW system and £9,300 to £9,900 for 6kW, based on official figures for 2025/26 installations. Our own prices start from £6,495 for a 4.4kW system of ten panels with a hybrid inverter, and from £9,295 with a 5.8kWh battery. Every price includes scaffolding, certification and VAT at 0%.

For comparison, the national median for a 4.4kW system at £1,546 per kW would be about £6,800. The Energy Saving Trust, quoted by Which?, puts a typical 4.5kW system at around £7,600, and the government's Warm Homes Plan gives an average of £9,000 to £12,000 for solar with a battery.
What the price includes

What adds to the cost
Scaffolding on tall or awkward houses
Scaffolding is included for a normal two-storey house. Three-storey homes, roofs over conservatories or extensions, and properties where scaffold has to go over a neighbour's land or a public pavement need more of it, and sometimes a council licence.
Bird mesh
Mesh around the edge of the panels stops pigeons nesting underneath. We recommend it wherever pigeons are common, which is most towns, and it is far cheaper to fit on install day than after a nest has formed.
Optimisers
If part of your roof is shaded, optimisers on the affected panels stop one shaded panel pulling down the whole string. They are priced per panel.
Consumer unit upgrade
Older fuse boards without modern protection, or with no spare way, may need replacing before we can connect safely. We spot this at survey, not on the day.
A battery
The biggest single addition. On our 4.4kW package a 5.8kWh battery adds £2,800. Read about solar panels with battery and our solar battery cost guide.
Roof type and layout
Natural slate takes longer than tile. Panels split over two or three roof faces need more rails and cabling. Flat roofs need frames, and ground mounts need a frame plus trenching.
Solar panel costs by region in England
Prices vary by region, mainly because of labour, access and scaffolding costs. The figures below are the mean installed cost per kW for 2025/26 from the government's MCS cost data. The last column multiplies the 4 to 10kW figure by 6 to show a typical 6kW system without a battery.

Means are pulled up by expensive jobs, so the median, the middle price, is lower: £1,595 per kW up to 4kW and £1,546 per kW for 4 to 10kW. VAT on solar panels
Solar panels installed in homes are zero rated for VAT from 1 May 2023 to 31 March 2027, and batteries have been included since 1 February 2024, whether fitted with panels or added later. From 1 April 2027 the rate is due to become 5%. On a £9,295 system, 5% would add about £465, so installing before the deadline saves money. Business installations pay VAT at the standard rate.
How our fixed price works
We quote once, in writing, after the survey. That price is what you pay. It only changes if the roof is not as described, for example if rotten battens are found when tiles come off, and in that case we stop, show you, and agree any change before continuing. We take no deposit until the survey is done, and you have a 14-day cooling-off period after signing. Deposits are protected under the RECC consumer code.
